Registration for SU's Summer Enrichment Academies Open
SALISBURY, MD---Registration is open for 蜜桃情人’s 2023 Summer Enrichment Academies.
Each academy, geared toward elementary, middle and high school students, lasts five to 10 days. They include a series of topics to allow students to learn more about areas for which they have a passion from University faculty and industry experts. Academies held on SU’s main campus include “all-you-care-to-eat” lunch at the Commons dining hall.
Academies include:
- Eastern Shore Writing Project: Young Writers Workshop (grades 3-5), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. June 26-30: This academy offers students a space for informal, playful, creative and expressive writing. This will be an opportunity for these students to hone their writing skills, develop a creative writing project and collaborate with their peers. On the last day, students will share a piece of original writing. Cost is $150.
- Henson STEM Summer Enrichment Academy (middle school), 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 26-30: The STEM academy is an interactive experience for middle school students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This academy will consist of two sessions per day, taught by SU’s STEM faculty. 蜜桃情人 will work closely with their peers as they put their problem-solving, creativity and collaboration skills to the test. Cost is $300.
- World Languages and Cultures (middle and high school), 1-5 p.m. June 26-30: Through an immersion in French and Spanish, this academy will encourage students to develop an interest in languages, and a curiosity for diverse cultures and people. Each day, they will explore a new theme (food, holidays, fashion, famous people and monuments). They also will engage in hands-on activities such as games, calligraphy, cooking, arts and crafts, and movies. Cost is $150.
- Orchestra (middle and high school), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 10-14: 蜜桃情人 who play strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments will perform in an orchestra, developing their musical and ensemble skills in a fun and supportive setting. They will also participate in rhythm, theory and sight singing sessions. 蜜桃情人 must provide their own instruments and must have at least two years of lessons/experience. Cost is $150.
- Entrepreneurship Academy (middle and high school), 9 a.m.-noon July 10-14: SU’s entrepreneurship team will lead students through the process of idea creation, whiteboarding, collaborative thinking, assessment, building ideas, idea design, prototype development, logo and marketing materials, pitch training, and practice. 蜜桃情人 will participate in a final pitch presentation of their design and marketing plan. This class takes place at SU’s Dave and Patsy Rommel Center for Entrepreneurship downtown. Cost is $150.
- Slime (elementary school), 1-5 p.m. July 10-14: 蜜桃情人 will explore tactile and abstract art through hands-on learning disguised as fun. They will become scientists in the SU “slime lab,” learning about texture, color, painting, storytelling and more. They also will learn through trial and error while making slime and connecting their creations to various themes. This class takes place at SU Art Galleries Downtown. Cost is $150.
- Comics (elementary school), 9 a.m.-noon July 10-14 and July 31-August 4 (two sessions): 蜜桃情人 explore various techniques of self-expression through sequential storytelling, character creation and universe building. They will use techniques such as drawing, painting, collage and creative writing to tell a story in visual form. This class is at SU Art Galleries Downtown. Cost is $150.
- Yoga and Mindfulness for Teens (high school), 1-5 p.m. July 10-14: Yoga can help reduce stress and anxiety, and increase strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. Regular yoga practice can build self-esteem and self-respect. This course includes yoga practice, breathing techniques, mindfulness, meditation and relaxation. 蜜桃情人 also will participate in art and journaling activities. This course will be taught by two local certified yoga instructors and yoga therapists. Cost is $150.
- All About Health: Your Heart and Muscles and Mind (middle school), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 17-21: This course features hands-on activities related to the heart, muscles and mind. Interact with cutting-edge technology like high-fidelity human patient simulators, a life-sized digital anatomy table, laboratory microscopes and other medical equipment. 蜜桃情人 will practice skills like taking vital signs, assessing body movements and investigating cells. Through role-playing activities, students also will learn how to fight stigma and identify signs of mental health challenges. Cost is $150.
- Outdoor and Environmental Education (high school), 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 17-21: 蜜桃情人 experience nature and the wonders of the outdoors in this academy. Through outdoor exploration, hands-on activities, and team-building, they will develop a positive attitude toward learning while increasing their self-esteem and self-confidence. They will also develop their environmental awareness and critical thinking skills while participating in activities including canoeing, fishing, hiking, navigation, “Leave No Trace,” CPR lessons and outdoor games. Cost is $150.
- Theatre Tech (middle and high school), 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 17-28: 蜜桃情人 will learn about the technical side of the theater. They will design and build costumes and stage settings. They will learn about stage lighting and sound design. The students will put what they learn to practical use by providing technical support for the final showcase performance of the musical theatre and voice academy. Cost is $600.
- Musical Theatre and Voice (high school), 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 17-28: This academy will address the musical theater process and vocal techniques for the singer-actor through improvisatory exercise, theater games, vocal master classes and analysis. The academy will culminate with a final showcase featuring solo and ensemble repertoires from musical theater and classical genres. Registration fee includes transportation and entrance to a professional production. Cost is $750.
- Games (elementary school), 9 a.m.-noon July 17-21 and August 7-11 (two sessions): 蜜桃情人 will explore various aspects of game creation, making their own rules, cards, characters and gameboards. They then will work in groups to play-test their creations, and learn about game mechanics and teambuilding. This class is at SU Art Galleries Downtown. Cost is $150.
- Tie Dye (elementary school), 1-5 p.m. July 17-21: 蜜桃情人 will learn a variety of dyeing techniques, both wearable and abstract. They also will explore the work of abstract painters and make both functional designs and abstract creations. This class is at SU Art Galleries Downtown. Cost is $150.
- Live Action Film (middle school), 9 a.m.-noon July 31-August 4: The May Literacy Center Film Academy will be “lights up” for young filmmakers working together to produce their visions on screen. 蜜桃情人 will write, produce and act in their own short films. Learners will engage in storyboarding, script writing, filming and video editing using the latest software. At the end of the week, students will showcase their films for family and friends. Cost is $150.
- Bootcamp for Rising Seniors (high school), 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 31-August 4: This one-week intensive course provides enrichment activities to prepare high school seniors with the skills they will need to smoothly transition to college or the workplace after graduation. 蜜桃情人 will develop skills in choosing a career path, financial literacy, goal setting, time management, study skills, public speaking, test taking, critical thinking, problem-solving, information literacy, college reading and writing, diversity, and other topics. Cost is $300.
- Elements (elementary school), 1-5 p.m. July 31-August 4: 蜜桃情人 explore natural elements through art making: earth – clay and ceramics; fire – liquid painting with heat; water – watercolors and outdoor water games; and wind – sun catchers that will be displayed outside. This class is at SU Art Galleries Downtown. Cost is $150.
- Mash-Ups (elementary school), 1-5 p.m. August 7-11: Mash-ups will consist of a new project from the slime, tie-dye and elements academies. 蜜桃情人 will gain insight into each of the three artistic themes and confidence in their art-making skills. This class is at SU Art Galleries Downtown. Cost is $150.
