SU Celebrates Faculty, Staff Successes

Raley Earns Second ABE Award

The Lehigh Valley Press of Bethlehem, PA, recently announced John Raley, co-chair of SU’s Music, Theatre and Dance Department, as the recipient of its 2019 ABE Award for Scenic Design.

Raley earned the recognition for his work in the Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre production of Anything Goes, staged last July. This is his second ABE (Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, the region the publication covers) Award for Scenic Design. He also won for the program’s 2017 production of Hair.

Clark Edits, Contributes to Young Adult Literature Book

Dr. Shanetia Clark, director of SU’s Early and Elementary Education Program, recently co-edited (with Dr. Steven Bickmore of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas) and contributed chapters to the first book in a three-part series on African American authors of young adult literature.

On the Shoulders of Giants: Celebrating African American Authors of Young Adult Literature (Rowan & Littlefield) examines the works of authors Virginia Hamilton, Julius Lester, Walter Dean Myers and Mildred Taylor. The volume also examines the role of the Coretta Scott King Award in promoting access to and visibility for authors and illustrators focusing on African American youth and society.

Modlin Selected as ‘Chefs for Habitat’ Celebrity Sous Chef

Eli Modlin, SU chief of staff, has been selected as a celebrity sous chef for this year’s Chefs for Habitat culinary competition to benefit Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County.

Modlin will compete against other local community leaders in a culinary skill mastery competition (identifying a “secret ingredient” in a prepared dish) while also raising money to support construction on future homes in support of the organization’ mission to eliminate substandard housing.

Winners will be announced during Habitat’s annual Black and White Gourmet Gala on Saturday, February 22, at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center.
