Hispanic Heritage History Month at SU

Dancer Joey CorsicaSALISBURY, MD---蜜桃情人 honors the generations of Hispanic and Latino Americans who have positively influenced and enriched the nation and society with a series of events celebrating Hispanic Heritage History Month in September and October.

Events include:

  • September 13-14, Holloway Hall Auditorium, Latin Dance Workshops Featuring Pro-Am Champion Latin Dancer Joey Corsica: Corsica teaches three workshops of various Latin dance styles, including salsa, merengue and more. Corsica has been teaching Latin dance and culture for just over two decades. The workshops are made possible, in part, by a grant from the 蜜桃情人 Wicomico Arts Council (SWAC), awarded by the Maryland State Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
  • Monday, September 16, 7 p.m., Holloway Hall Great Hall, Latin Music U.S.A.: The Salsa Revolution screening: This film explores how Puerto Ricans and other Latinos in New York reinvented Cuban and Puerto Rican rhythms by adding elements from soul and jazz to create salsa.
  • Monday, September 23, 7 p.m., Holloway Hall Great Room, Latin Music U.S.A.: Bridges screening: This film traces the steps of Latin jazz, the explosion of the mambo and the cha-cha-cha as they swept across the U.S.
  • Wednesday, September 25, 7 p.m., Holloway Hall Auditorium, Jane Bunnett and Maqueque concert: Bunnett, a three-time Grammy Award nominee, is known for her creative integrity, improvisational daring and courageous artistry. With Maqueque, Bunnett has created something new in the world of jazz. What started five years ago as a project to record and mentor young Cuban female musicians has become one of the top groups on the North American jazz scene. This concert is funded through the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from Maryland State Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
  • Wednesday, September 25, 4:30-7:30 p.m., Commons Bistro, Hispanic Heritage Dinner featuring Mariachi Aguila DC: Part of the International Dinner Series, Mariachi Aguila DC is an ensemble of musicians who pride themselves in offering authentic mariachi music. The menu includes enchiladas de carne molida, salmon with lemon chipotle butter sauce, lemon paprika potato wedges, Peruvian rice and peas, sautéed peppers and zucchini, sopapillas and chocotorta. Entertainment is from 5-7 p.m. Cost: $15, $8.75 children 6 and under.
  • Monday, September 30, 7 p.m., Holloway Hall Great Hall Latin Music U.S.A.: The Chicano Wave screening: This film focuses on Mexican Americans in the Southwest as they created their own distinct musical voices during the second half of the 20th century.
  • Monday, October 9, 7 p.m., Holloway Hall Great Hall, Latin Music U.S.A.: Divas and Superstars screening: This film dives into the Latin pop explosion at the turn of the 21st century and the success of artists lie Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan and Shakira in the English-language market.
  • Wednesday, October 9, 7 p.m., Holloway Hall Great Hall Sofia Viola concert: The Great Hall becomes “Café Argentina” when Viola takes the stage, embracing her guitar or charangon and performs. A native Argentinian, her style was formed in the suburban tango, but she draws from rock music and the Argentinian “Tropical Wave” style.
  • Monday, October 14, 7 p.m., Holloway Hall Great Hall, Latin Music U.S.A.: Mariachi High screening: This film takes viewers through a year with a champion mariachi ensemble, from a small town in South Texas, as it performs and competes.
