Geography Major - Climatology Track

About the Program

Have you ever wanted to make a difference in climate change? By studying climatology at 蜜桃情人, you can learn how to become an atmospheric scientist and answer questions such as:

  • Why do some thunderstorms produce tornadoes?
  • Why are some summers hotter and drier than others?
  • How can numerical weather prediction models be improved?
  • How can we improve forecasting flash floods?
  • Is there a relationship between global warming and hurricane intensities?

In our program, you learn how to solve real environmental problems through field work, research and other hands-on experiences – an opportunity you won’t get at many other universities. SU’s department also has the largest selection of undergraduate atmospheric science courses in the State of Maryland, and its location on the Eastern Shore provides countless opportunities for students. Our climatology graduates have been slowing the erosion of coastal beaches along the Gulf Coast and cleaning up the environment of Aberdeen Proving Ground.

SU alumni can be found working as researchers or environmental consultants, and at engineering firms throughout the Mid-Atlantic, and even places such as:

  • Maryland Department of Environment
  • NASA Wallops Flight Facility
  • Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO)
  • United States Geologic Survey

Many of our climatology majors also go on to some of the finest graduate schools in the country, including Johns Hopkins School of Engineering, McGill’s Geography Department, the University of Delaware, University of Maryland and Mississippi State University.

The climatology track is designed for students interested in careers in climate change. For those interested in atmospheric physics and weather forecasting, SU also offers a meteorology program.
